Collagen Induction Therapy

Collagen Induction Therapy

The principle behind Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is to stimulate the body's own production of collagen to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and to improve skin tone and texture. Under topical anesthesia a sterile needling device is utilized to create vertical automated micro-fractures or channels into the dermis of the skin which will increase new collagen formation by activating the body's healing cascade. The micro-fracturing releases growth factors, stem cells, and elastin which promote no-scar healing and the deposition of normal woven collagen rather than scar-type collagen. Additionally, the procedure stimulates superficial skin cells called keratinocytes to migrate across these micro-channels and proliferate, thickening the epidermis and repairing damaged skin. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) enhances these effects and speeds up recovery because of its concentrated healing properties.

Over the next six months new collagen-forming cells called fibroblasts and tiny blood vessels called capillaries will travel to the micro-channels and create new tissue. This will fill scars and wrinkles to minimize their appearance significantly.

Advantages of CIT-PRP

Collagen Induction Therapy

CIT-PRP is a painless procedure to undergo. It requires minimal downtime and achieves significant results. It can be used on all areas of the body and therefore is a very versatile and efficient tool for skin rejuvenation. CIT allows the epidermal barrier to remain fully intact because the micro-channels seal within hours of treatment. This gives us a perfect window to infuse the skin with therapeutic serums such as Platelet-Rich Plasm (PRP), growth factors, vitamins, anti-oxidants, and anti-aging serums with minimal to no risk of infection, scarring, or downtime. Additionally because there is no heat involved in the CIT-PRP procedure, there no risk of pigmentation changes post-treatment.

It's the minimally invasive EFFECTIVE therapy we have been waiting for to achieve fantastic results for our patients!

What is PRP?

Platelets are vital cells in the blood that carry high concentrations of growth factors and are involved in coagulation and wound healing. The growth factors include: epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta 1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), platelet derived growth factors (PDGF), and keratinocyte growth factor (KGF). Platelets also carry cells that are anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial to help the skin heal safely.

When platelets are activated, the growth factors are released. The growth factors send chemical signals to surrounding tissue to multiply important collagen-forming cells called fibroblasts and skin cells called keratinocytes as well as stimulate blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and movement of anti-inflammatory healing cells (monocytes and macrophages). Collagen plumps the skin and reverses the visible signs of aging.

PRP is 100% safe because it is obtained from the patient's own blood via a simple, single blood draw. The PRP is separated from the blood using specialized collection tubes and a centrifuge right here in our office. Separating the PRP from the blood results in a concentration of platelets 2-3 times normal.

The microneedling procedure will create millions of microscopic fractures into the epidermis which will allow the penetration of PRP into the dermis and initiate the immune response in the dermal layer. The highly concentrated PRP substantially increases the collagen production while speeding up the healing time.

What is CIT-PRP used to treat?

Fine lines or moderate wrinkles, moderate skin laxity (looseness), diminished texture, tone, or color of the skin, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and photo-aging, traumatic scars, and hair loss.

What is the procedure like?

A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The numbing cream is removed and the treatment area is cleaned with sterile water and a gentle cleanser. Topical hyaluronic acid (HA) peptide gel is applied to the skin. A microneedling device is glided across the skin to create the micro-channels and deliver the topical HA into the skin and make the treatment very comfortable. PRP, obtained by a simple blood draw, is also applied to the skin during the microneedling treatment to enhance the effects greatly.

In our practice, each patient is treated with a single-use disposable tip. Each tip has multiple stainless steel 32-gauge needles on it. The tip is fixed to an automated high-speed vibrating handheld device that looks like a pen creating 1300-1500 micro-channels per second.

How long does the procedure take?

Treatment sessions range from 30-60 minutes including the time required for topical numbing cream to be applied and take effect.

How many treatments are needed?

This depends on the severity of the problem and the patient's desired outcome. Usually 3-6 treatments are recommended spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

What body parts can be treated with CIT-PRP?

The scalp, face, neck, decollete, hands, abdomen, or any part of the body!

Am I a candidate for CIT-PRP?

CIT-PRP is suitable for almost all patients since natural collagen production stops between the ages 30-40. It is not recommended for patients with active infections, chronic skin diseases, chronic infections, blood clotting problems, immune compromised state for any reason, poor healing, or a history of hypertrophic scarring or keloids.

What is the recovery time / downtime after a treatment?

Immediately after the procedure, the skin is sensitive and pink and may have pinpoint blood visible on the surface. Mild swelling and pinkness (like a mild sunburn) may occur for 24-48 hours. It is safe to resume normal activities after the procedure. We recommend waiting until the next day to wash, exercise and to apply make-up.

When do I expect to see results?

It will take 3 months for the collagen remodeling process to fully begin and this will continue for 6 months after each CIT-PRP treatment. The improvement is gradual and improved substantially by stacking CIT-PRP treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart. A vital part of the rejuvenation is a customized skin care regimen. This regimen is continued for at least 6 months after the procedure to ensure the continued maintenance and production of collagen and elastin and to help achieve your desired goals.

What changes can be expected with CIT-PRP?

The skin will appear smoother, fresher, and with less fine lines. Stretch marks and acne scars will improve. Pigmentation irregularities can also improve. Overall, skin tone and texture will improve while creating a natural, more youthful look.

How long do the effects of CIT-PRP last?

The effects have been seen to last 5-10 years, varying from person to person. As the skin ages, some of the new collagen also ages. Fortunately, maintenance therapy can be used to continue to improve the skin's appearance. We recommend maintenance treatments every 6 months to optimize results.

Can I get botox or fillers in conjunction with CIT-PRP?

Yes. Based on your desired goals, our team at DSCI will recommend a treatment plan with timeline.
